Added the second tape (Q636) of the five tape White Night recorded in April 78. Some of this tape was used in the Father Cares NPR documentary. At the end of the tape is the part where the old woman sings to Jones but it cuts off and does not pick back up on the next tape. I wonder where NPR got their version of the tape?

The other day on a college radio station near me I heard a song and at the end of if they launched in to the "Never heard a man speak like this man before" song they used to sing to Jones. You can hear it on the Q636 tape at 3:30 on my YouTube video.
Anyway, someone posted the name of the band that sings this song on my Youtube comments. The band is called The Mars Volta and the song is called Goliath Dance. I found a video of it on Youtube:

If you can't take the music skip about halfway through the video and you'll here the "Never heard a man speak like this man before" part. There are some pretty funny parts in this video as well as a lot of cringe worthy ones |

Thanks for sharing. Those automotive disasters were reminiscent of the videos taken by Highway Patrol mounted cameras – often aired on the TV show “Cops”.
While the music doesn’t suit my taste, there is a band that uses the audio of the woman vividly describing a chest constriction, calling out to “father,” followed by a chorus of “thank you, father,” that was shown on the “In search of…” video that I posted the other day.
Does anyone know which band/song uses this segment as the intro |

Sorry, I don't, but I just wanted to say that I'm shocked by this tape.
It's unbelievable, perhaps the most shocking I've heard so far in terms of JJ's language and obsession with sex.
Surely the seniors must have been appalled by his crude language and boasts about his sexual prowess. Is there any need for it? Is there a place for it? It's wack.
The song should be "I never heard a perv boast like this man before" instead.
And what's with the 'Red Indian' noises at the end?! |

| That was thier "war chant". Deborah layton talks alot about it in her book. It was used to scare off people hiding in the bush waiting to attack them. or something to that matter. |

Welcome to The Peoples Temple Discussion Forum, vee!
Sorry, I don't, but I just wanted to say that I'm shocked by this tape.
Not to worry, it was one of those quasi famous heavy metal bands, and I’m sure it’ll turn up eventually.

Father taught his disciples that he was the only true heterosexual, and that sex was selfish, antithetical to the great socialist movement, and solely based on need. Father, admittedly, would fulfill the sexual needs of his disciples and potential recruits with his “sex for socialism” philosophy. Some shunned the temple because of this, but many remained true to the cause precisely because of the non-pretentious sexual attitude. Bathrooms and showers were shared by both sexes -- without a modicum of privacy. As I recall, one young lady was punished for trying to use some building material as a divider in her cabin.
The song should be "I never heard a perv boast like this man before" instead.
Or perhaps “Father cares, and he’ll be behind you all the way.” |

Thanks for the welcome, grenchat!

Interesting. Makes sense, I guess. As I work may way through the tapes, I'm hearing this war chant more and more. JJ really sounds under the influence at times. Was this war chant something that they had from the start at JT, or only as his paranoia/drug use increased?
Must get Deborah Layton's book next - thanks for the tip. Been reading David Chidester's this weekend, which focuses mainly on religion and is hard-going at times. I'll add some comments as soon as I finish it.

JJ sure was an intriguing character. I wonder how soon he started making this clear to his flock. |

Everyone on the Planning Commission – as well as many of the rank and file – knew of Jim’s extramarital affairs. These were only hidden from outside detractors. Jones speaks quite frankly of these on “An Aural Journey With The Peoples Temple” by Brad Elliot.
Sex was also used as means of blackmail, to curry favor of those in high positions, or to persuade detractors to desist in their efforts. Jones formed a special Diversions Unit to work in tangent with the public relations department. For more on the aforementioned, I would recommend “Heavenly Deceptor” by Nathan Landau. |

Thanks for that.
David Chidester's "Salvation and Suicide: Jim Jones, the Peoples Temple, and Jonestown" barely mentions this, other than it being part of JJ's socialism. The "Guyana Tragedy" portrays JJ as something of a sex fiend, of course.
I'll keep reading! |
